Echo between the conferences.

in Enterprise 2.0

I was not able to attend the Enterprise 2.0 conference in San Francisco last week.  I really missed it and wished I was there.  So much so that I was a bit reluctant to follow the tweet stream.  Seriously.  It’s just not the same as being there in person.  Sorry, but face-to-face meetings really do beat the virtual world.  But we do what we can.  I could not make it out there — but I did spend the time in the trenches with a client of mine who is really a great example of E2.0 realities.

This week I am attending the Enterprise 2.0 Summit in Frankfurt, Germany.  I’m very excited about this one — as I hope to meet many wonderful people and gain a new insight on the state of E2.0 from the European perspective.  I’m going to present at this conference — the topic:  Preparing the workforce for Enterprise 2.0.  I have been giving workshops on this and related topics and have developed thoughts about what works and what does not when discussing concepts related to Enterprise 2.0 to the uninitiated.  I’ll share these thoughts and also announce a new research report that is related to my main message.  This report will soon be on sale at the 2.0 Adoption Council Blog.  But details will be released this week.

I hope the tweet stream will be interesting to those of you who follow it.  The face-to-face will be great.

The main message:  Realize that the E2.0 Blogosphere is an echo chamber.  It’s OK to be one.  It helps us refine and learn.  But real work happens outside — in the real world, in real companies with real challenges.  There is a translation we have to make between E2.0-speak and real-world-speak.  And I’ll give some examples of this translation, why it is needed, and how to ensure that you make this translation effective for your workforce (or client).  I’m inspired by my recent reading list, especially the book “The Trusted Advisor” which has wonderful insight on the art of careful listening.

Speaking of books, I plan to read Andrew McAfee’s new Enterprise 2.0 book on the flight over.  And I’ll certainly let you know what I think of it.  I’m looking forward to it.

So the theme is going to be echoes — it’s all about sounds reverberating.  I wish I could bring my sound studio gear — now that would be a cool presentation gimmick.

Wish me a safe flight.
